My runaway 6 year old!

I guess when you have 4 kids you should expect one of them to run away at some point. I never thought it would be my 6 year old! He ran away from home today. It was equally sad as it was funny.
My husband and son, Gabe were wrestling today. Gabe, as usual, got sick of being wrestled and asked dad to stop. Of course, dad in the spirit of wresting and playing, declined. Gabe gave dad "1 last chance" to stop. Dad didn't stop. So Gabe declared he would run away. With the utmost concern, dad said "Well, you better take some Goldfish, because you might get hungry".

So, Gabe packed up his Goldfish crackers into his backpack, went to get dressed, asked me to help get his coat, and even thought to take a few items of clothing still on their hanger.

So, to our surprise- out the door he went. We thought for sure he would go stand out in the drive way. I got my camera and dad got the video camera. Again to our surprise, he went to the drive way and kept on going. He made sure to stay on the sidewalk and circled the cul-de-sac- went up the street and circled the next cul-de-sac and continued on up the street.

I made dad and Kamen run after him and when they didnt come back, I ran out in my pajamas and camera to see what was going on. About 15 minutes later he finally came back.

We realized that in the beginning he was completely joking, but when no one stopped him it upset him...and then he was determined to run away. As I said...it was sad and funny all at the same time.

Poor Gabe! So tortured! I did take pictures, but I can't bare to display my 6 year old little boy standing on the sidewalk up the street with is backpack full of goldfish and his clothes on hangers in hand.

This is, like you said, sad and funny. I, too, have a 6 year old, who threatened to runaway when we had him go to bed by himself (without us laying with him until he falls asleep). He said, tomorrow. I said, I'm bad at alot of things when it comes to parenting, but making you go to bed on your own, is not one of them.

By the way, I'm just a random mom who ran across your blog on one of those rare occasions where my kids are all asleep! So you never know who will read your stories!
